Before Your Pregnancy Begins…

  • Dream it.

It all begins with hopes and dreams. You are fortunate. Despite having diabetes or pre-diabetes, you are planning your pregnancy poising you to enter into pregnancy with the most control and choices as possible. Pregnancy is an experience, as is life, rife with uncertainty. There are aspects you have control over them and your awareness can maximize their impact.

  • Optimize It

It all begins with being in the best state of health possible. Maybe you are a busy working professional with an A1c of 7%. Many in primary care will affirm this as a noble goal. However, when seeking pregnancy, starting out within the normal A1c range of 4.6 - 5.6% is ideal, reduces risk of congenital anomalies as well as risks across the lifespan. Evidence has not parsed out how much risk from having diabetes is related to high blood sugar at conception versus throughout various phases of pregnancy.

  • Grow it.

Once you have optimized your blood glucose control, you are not positioned to do the best you can do as you maintain this control over the course of your pregnancy.
